SOCIETY: Meaning, Role and Charecteristics



Society is the main focus of the study of sociology. The famous philosopher Aristotle said, "Man is a social creature, he cannot live without society." In sociology, the word "society" is a key term. It comes from the Latin word ‘socius’, which means ‘companionship’. From this, we can understand the importance of society in human life.

Sociologists have defined sociology in different ways:

1) MacIver says, society is a web of different social relations.

2) According to Lapierre, society not only studies people but also studies the effects and interrelationships of different behaviors, customs, etiquette, etc. on human beings.

3) Ginsberg says that a society is a combination of different behaviors of different people that form human relationships with people.

The main topic of sociology is society, so it needs to have a clear idea. From birth to death, the child lives in the society, the society educates the child. Society has come to meet the various needs and wants of the people. No group of people can be called a society. Society is an interconnected social entity. Society refers to a public gathering organized for the same purpose.


Characteristics of society:

• Cooperation:

 We live in harmony in the society which is the identity of cohabitation. People cooperate with each other in society. In society, we also see that different people in the same society feel the same tension. The result is that everyone works for the same purpose.

• Your feelings and your understanding:

 Society is made up of people, we cannot imagine a society without people. And society cannot develop without social relations and social life. In fact a complex communication of different social relationships. Social relationships are formed only when mutual understanding and feelings develop between the members of society.

•Social control:

 One of the importance of society is practical control over people. A person's movements, behavior, speech, etc. are controlled by society. Society protects people from many things indirectly and directly.

• Culture: 

Every society is different from other societies, every society has its own. The way of life of the society of different regions is different. Culture is not a society but culture is just a part of society.

• Variability:

 Human society is always changing because human thinking is always changing. First, the society was a classless society then agrarian society then feudal society again then industrial society and finally modern society.

• Different:

 Different types of people live in society, i.e. cohabitation of different people. We can notice that in the same society there are teachers, businessmen, workers, police, doctors, etc. This diversity of society brings dynamism and stability to society.
